Mirzapur in the Dark: Citizen Grievance Highlights City-Wide Power Struggle

On September 22, 2025, a significant part of Mirzapur city experienced an unannounced, day-long power outage that left many residents grappling with the sudden loss of electricity.
As a result, this caused widespread disruption and distress among its residents, many of whom relied heavily on electrical power for daily activities such as cooking, working from home, and accessing vital online services.
The sweltering heat exacerbated the situation, making it particularly uncomfortable for families without air conditioning or proper ventilation.
In response, a local resident lodged a formal complaint to the municipality, calling for immediate action to address the power infrastructure issues and urging officials to implement contingency plans to prevent future outages from causing similar chaos and discomfort within the community.

The Core of the Complaint

Mr. Yogi M. P. Singh lives in Mirzapur, a vibrant town known for its rich cultural heritage and strong community ties. Recently, he filed a grievance (Registration No: GOVUP/E/2025/0111400) with the Executive Engineer of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) regarding an ongoing issue that has been affecting countless residents in the area.
In his detailed complaint, he meticulously outlined the public’s growing frustration over the sudden and prolonged disruption of electricity services that has not only disrupted daily life but has also impacted local businesses and essential services.
Mr. Singh emphasized the urgent need for accountability and prompt action from the authorities to restore normalcy and ensure reliable electric supply for all citizens, encouraging a sense of civic responsibility among the community to advocate for their rights.

The filed document explicitly stated something important. A junior engineer officially provided a reason. It was “essential repair work on the wires between the poles in the Bathua area.” Still, the complainant argues that this justification is inadequate for several key reasons.

  • Lack of Prior Notification: A primary point of contention is, indeed, the total absence of any advance warning. As a result, the grievance states, “The authorities neglected to inform the residents in advance about this day-long power shutdown. Furthermore, a formal announcement should have appeared in local newspapers, as is the protocol for such extensive repairs.” This failure in communication ultimately left families, students, and businesses completely unprepared.
  • Disproportionate Impact: Furthermore, the complaint questions the necessity of shutting down power for a large part of the city. Specifically, this is only for a localized repair. It argues, “As a result, the repair work in a single area, Bathua, has led to a total shutdown. Indeed, this has affected a significant part of Mirzapur City. Therefore, this seems like a disproportionate and unjustified measure.”

A Tale of Two Justifications

This incident perfectly encapsulates the ongoing struggle between a utility’s operational realities and a citizen’s fundamental expectations.

The Utility’s Perspective: From the UPPCL’s viewpoint, such maintenance is, thus, critical. It is, undeniably, an unavoidable aspect of ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of the power grid. Moreover, repairing worn-out or damaged wires serves as a preventative measure. This helps to avoid larger, more dangerous, and unpredictable blackouts in the future. Additionally, for the safety of the workers performing these repairs, shutting down the power line is a non-negotiable protocol.

The Public’s Frustration: Conversely, for the consumers, the sudden and lengthy outage feels like a betrayal. It directly contradicts the widely promoted promise of a 24-hour electricity supply. The grievance pointedly asks, “Where is the 24-hour supply? Where are our political masters like Narendra Damodardas Modi and Yogi Adityanath who promised to give 24 hours supply?” This sentiment reflects a deep-seated frustration with the gap between political promises and the reality on the ground.

Current Status of the Grievance

On September 22, 2025, the government officially processed and received the grievance through its portal, marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to enhance citizen engagement and address concerns in a timely manner.
After a thorough review, the authorities ensured that all relevant information was collected and documented accurately.
Here are the key details of the action taken: the grievance was categorized under the appropriate department, assigned to a dedicated team for immediate follow-up, and a confirmation was sent to the complainant to acknowledge the receipt and outline the next steps in the resolution process.

What’s Next?

The immediate issue of the power cut persists, casting a significant shadow over the daily lives of the residents.
Nevertheless, the formal grievance has ensured that the matter is on the official record, providing a sense of reassurance that their voices are being heard.
The residents of Mirzapur now await a formal explanation and a resolution by the October 2nd deadline, which looms closer with each passing day.
More importantly, they hope this incident prompts the UPPCL to set up better communication protocols that can keep the community informed during such crises.
They also want more efficient planning that considers not just immediate fixes but long-term solutions to prevent similar occurrences.
It is crucial that essential maintenance does not lead to extreme public inconvenience in the future, as these outages disrupt not only daily routines but also impact businesses and local economies.
Engaging in proactive dialogue and transparent updates could foster trust between the utility provider and the community, ensuring residents feel valued and understood.
